JBOD is Just a Bunch of Disk or Drive that can be configured as Redundant array of independent disks.

RAID arrays write data across multiple disks as a way of storing data redundantly (to achieve fault tolerance) or to stripe data across multiple disks to get better performance than any one disk could provide on its own. Typically, a RAID array will appear to the operating system as a single disk.

JBOD is an alternative to using a RAID configuration. Rather than configuring a storage array to use a RAID level, the disks within the array are either spanned or treated as independent disks. Spanning configurations use a technique called concatenation to combine the capacity of all of the disks into a single, large logical disk. Although some RAID levels also concatenate disks, numbered RAID levels generally use striping or parity while JBOD does not.

The individual disks of a JBOD array can each serve as a volume or they can be concatenated, or spanned, to form one single logical volume or LUN. Whereas RAID demands that all drives be of similar capacity, JBOD drives can be of various sizes.

JBOD is a cost-effective network storage solution. JBOD controllers are less expensive than RAID controllers and you can mix and match disks while using every block for primary storage.

The read/write operations of RAID can be much faster than those of JBODs. With RAID, the data stream can be divided and stored on multiple disks concurrently, whereas JBODs store the data stream on one disk at a time.

If you have a lot of data to store, particularly if just temporarily, JBODs are an economical solution. Make sure, however, that the data is not critical or you have an effective backup scheme in place.
